Abstract
Unedited scenes from Mary and Joe Chicago Style, a retelling of the Nativity as re-imagined by Chicago's Central Cinematographers amateur film club.
Description
Begins with multiple exterior shots of the Greyhound Bus Depot in downtown Chicago, followed by interior shots of Joseph (Sam Speciale) and a pregnant Mary (Julie Allen) leaving the station. Next are shots at the intersection of N Clark and W Randolph streets, including a scene of the pair being turned away from The Sherman House Hotel. From there, they head to the Chicago Civic Center. Mary and Joseph walk past the Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza and pause to take in the grandeur of the city. They solemnly cross in front of the United Artists movie theater, which is playing Summer of ’42, at Randolph and Dearborn streets. Several more shots of the pair wandering the Loop; they eventually board a city bus.
The next sequence features outtakes of a scene at a hospital. Mary, in a bed, is visited by a doctor played by Margaret Conneely, who gives Mary literature about family planning and rolls her eyes at something Mary says. Conneely then comes back with a nurse played by Mary Ann Kuch; they shake their heads and seem exasperated by something. A second doctor comes in and writes what looks like "post partum delirium" on a pad of paper.
Some shots of newborn babies in hospital bassinets are followed by a scene of Joseph getting mugged after asking a man for directions. A police officer drives up on a motorcycle and helps him up. Next are scenes of Mary and Joseph each speaking separately to a doctor (Stan Zeek) in the psychiatry ward. This is followed by exterior shots of Joseph walking past the Anti-Cruelty Society. Next are shots of Mary and Joseph talking to a woman inside of an archive, then waiting in a hallway holding a number and checking the clock. When their number is finally called, they speak to women from Emergency Welfare and the Manpower Development Program.
Next are exterior shots of Chicago-Read Mental Health Center, where Mary waits for Joseph, followed by scenes of Joseph pumping gas for a customer at a gas station. After talking to a man at a desk, Mary and Joseph pack their things and head to the Continental Trailways Bus Depot and buy tickets.
