Abstract
In 1967, Mervin LaRue Jr. and LaVere LaRue took their first of three trips to Japan, a country which they greatly enjoyed visiting, even in the wake of post-WWII anti-Japanese sentiment in the West. Mervin Jr. was sent to Japan in 1967 by Ampex to conduct a survey of their closed circuit television manufacturers, cassette tape recorder manufacturers, and related products. This film is a tourism reel of Hakone, credited as “photographed by Ichizuka-san" and possibly presented as a gift to the LaRue family as a keepsake from the trip. The reel begins and ends with painted title cards reading "Sep. 16 1967 / Welcome to Hakone / Mr. LaRue Mr. Heffernan." Mervin Jr., LaVere, and an unidentified woman and man are seen in front of the camera at various points throughout the film. Mr. Heffernan was a co-worker of Mervin Jr.'s and he is likely to be part of the other couple seen in the film. The reel includes images of Japanese landmarks such as Hakone Exhibition Hall, Mount Fuji, hot springs, and shrines. The footage is shot from moving car windows, on-board a trolley, and from an aerial gondola.
Mervin Jr. and LaVere returned to Japan for two trips after 1967, spending at least two weeks in the country in 1973 on a business trip to Bell & Howell Japan, during which Mervin Jr. advised the Japanese engineers on the installation of equipment at a manufacturing plant.
