Abstract
Produced in 1968, A SPACE TO GROW is a document of the first years of Upward Bound programs at several Chicago universities. Upward Bound is a federally funded program nationwide that was established in 1965 with the mission to help students engage in learning and inspire them to complete high school and move on to graduate from a college or university. Narrated by Henry Fonda, A SPACE TO GROW shows participants in the programs as they enroll in classes that range from stage production and sculpture to conflict resolution and philosophy, along the way receiving help from instructors and tutors at the schools. In a particularly inspired class, students perform speeches as prominent speakers about race relations, challenging the students to engage in the discussion themselves. By sticking closely to a small group of students, the film creates a deep understanding of the opportunities and effects of the programs. After premiering at an event to honor the first college graduates from Upward Bound, A SPACE TO GROW went on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. The film was co-sponsored by the Office of Economic Opportunity and the Upward Bound program.
