Abstract
Footage of Muhammad Ali in downtown Chicago on October 4, 1976.
Description
This film begins with a view of a large brick garage/warehouse located on the 1200 block of E 47th St in Kenwood, Chicago. WLS-TV sportscaster Mike Nolan hovers outside the threshold and then marches inside at the camera crew’s prompt. A brief shot presents a door labeled “1650 Muhammad Ali Enterprises” where Nolan stops and waits. This abruptly cuts to a scene in downtown Chicago in which Muhammad Ali emerges through revolving doors and walks down the street accompanied by a couple of associates while Nolan attempts to talk with him. The film concludes in a parking lot where Ali retrieves his Cadillac Eldorado and drives toward the exit where an excited crowd congregates.
While visiting Istanbul, Turkey three days earlier, Ali stated, “At the urging of my leader, Wallace Muhammad, I declare that I am quitting fighting as of now and from now on I will join the struggle for the Islamic cause.”
