Abstract
Newsreel footage of Soviet Ambassador to the U.S. Mikhail Menshikov arriving in Chicago in 1957.
Description
Ambassador Menshikov is greeted as he disembarks from an airplane with his wife. Outside the airport, protesters carry signs with slogans such as "Reach the Moon and Stay There" and "Remember Enslaved Lithuania." Many signs are written in cyrillic. Menshikov is interviewed about Sputnik and space travel on the tarmac. He talks about "peaceful competition" between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. He is asked about, but refuses to answer, questions about demonstations against Vice President Nixon in South America, saying simply that "communists are blamed for everything." Only some of the film has audio.
